简介:

In London, two old, eccentric, and extremely wealthy British brothers, Oliver and Roderick Montpelier (Ronald Squire, Wilfred Hyde-White), drew a currency note for a million pounds from the Bank of Englande him to eat there at any time and didn’t need to worry about the bill because of the note. He was a new millionaire from America then. After a while he returned to the brothers’ house and wanted to figure out the whole thing. He arrived there and was told that the brothers had been to foreign country. He read the letter carefully and knew that the brothers offered him a note of million pounds for a month, only a month, and a month later he had to return it to them. It seemed that he had to take it for a month. When he was still in thought, a volume of sound blew the note away and he chased the note which was floating in the air and in the film there were some funny things happened during the time. At last he caught the note in front of the tailor’s. Because his clothes were ragged and torn up he went into the shop and the most famous scene began. In the shop, at first the apprentice suggested him to the upstairs and showed him the cheapest clothes, what’s more, the shop owner reminded the apprentice to show him the back door quickly. Then when he said that he had no little money on him the apprentice jeered him .At the sight of the note the apprentice cried and the owner was shocked, too. They changed the manner and began to make up to him. They did make many promises and claimed that they would send his clothes to him tomorrow. Knowing that he didn’t take up his quarter the shop keeper did him a favor and arranged him to be housed in an expensive private hotel in Hanover Square. Well, the hotel receptor made a mistake and receipted the wrong person, a performer in circus. The appearance of Henry made the hotel a mass. Henry settled the matter and asked the performer to be his triggerman to make sure the safe of the note. Before long he paid his second visit to the consulate. The ambassador loaned him money and showed him to the swelldom. He attended a reception given by the Duchess of Cromarty at Hampshire House. In the reception many families wanted to introduce their daughters to him for he was quite a good person for their daughters’ marriage in the future. But at the first sight of Oliver Montpelier (Ronald Squire), the host’s niece, Henry fell in love with her. They were chatting in the terrace and sheered the others. Though Henry had no money he promised Montpelier to present the benevolent bidding block of orphanage for the homeless babies. In the place Henry got the vendue at the highest price, 5000 pound accidentally. The next day Henry got up with a good humor and planed to tell Montpelier the truth and the whole thing about note. At evening Henry went to the Duchess house to have dinner and met a old friend of his father, Mr. Lloyd Hastings. Henry and Montpelier expressed their love to each other and immersed in the love deeply so that he did not tell her the truth that he was penniless. Mr. Lloyd Hastings’s gold mine was in burst-up and asked Henry for help. Henry narrated his story to Mr. Lloyd and contented Mr. Lloyd to use his fame. Henry asked Montpelier out and told her the truth while Montpelier thought he was joking. Henry persisted it was true, which made Montpelier angry. She misunderstood him and thought he was suspicious of her quality. Henry tickled her and made her believe. Just then Mr. Lloyd came to tell Henry the good news about their benefits; Montpelier was huffy and went away. At the same time one of the customers of the hotel requested a maid hide Henry’ note and diffused a rumor that Henry was not a real millionaire but a liar. The maid did what the customer said and hided it under the carpet. The rumor ran fast; everyone wanted to know the truth and one news agency interviewed Henry who could not find his note and after the news came out, Henry began his difficult day. Everyone who was forwarded for later payment came to him for money then. The price of Mr. Lloyd’s stock fell down rapidly. He was penniless but he had to pay so much money, and settle the thing. The things went worse and the customer who incited the maid did the bad thing felt guilty and returned him the note when debt collectors lined up demanding to see the note. Montpelier also heard the rumor and suddenly understood Henry and came to find him. The things renewed and Henry returned the note to the brothers and dated with Montpelier
